Two Voices

By Emmett Lawrence

So, who are you?
Me?
Yeah.
Oh! I'm just a kid.
Just a kid. How old are you?
Twelve. I was born in October.
Twelve. . . what a fine age.
You think?
What's wrong with it?
I don't know. . .awkward.
What about it?
Well, school is pretty much the main thing. Then there's the social part. Frankly, it sucks.
What about it sucks?
Being cool is a piece of shit.
'Scuse your French. I have a thing about that.
Oh, sorry. I didn't realize.
That's okay. Back to the meeting. So, you're twelve right?
Yeah.
That makes you the monkey.
What do you mean?
In the medicine wheel.
Oh! You had me confused.
Tell me what you like doing.
Hmmm.
We can come back to that question if you want.
No, wait. I love to swim. It comes really naturally for me.
Anything else?
Yeah, I love to build things like cool forts and tree houses. Hey, I don't know your name yet.
My name is not a word, it is a feeling.
You'll know my name when you are ready.
When will I be ready?
There is no exact time.
Where do you come from?
I have always been here, but sometimes I go deep inside you almost into nothing-ness. That is when you don't need the help or the pain I cause. Let's finish it there for tonight.
Okay. . .goodbye.
No. it's not goodbye. It's see you later.
Then see you later it is.
