LOPEZ WRITERS GUILD

ABOUT LOPEZ ISLAND

Lopez Island is one of the San Juan Islands, located in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, north of Puget Sound, south of Vancouver Island, B.C. It can only be reached by small plane or by boat; several ferries run each day from the nearest town, Anacortes, Washington. A predominantly agricultural and marine economy supports the approximately 2000 people inhabiting an area the size of Manhattan. Long dark winters and short dazzling summers, thick forests, chilly water year round, and limited offerings in the way of diversion make life on the island unusually introspective, perhaps an explanation for its disproportionately high population of writers.
